An SRO give a student a high five

New South Glens Falls Central School District School Resource Officer (SRO) Hector Monge is approaching his new role with a focus on safety, service, and building meaningful relationships with students and staff.

While helping maintain a safe learning environment is an important part of his job, Monge believes some of his most impactful work happens through everyday interactions.

“I wanted to build positive relationships with students, help keep them safe, and be someone they can trust and turn to for help,” Monge said.

Take for example Thursday morning, when Tanglewood students were greeted by Monge as they arrived at school. Whether offering a friendly smile, a high-five, or a simple “good morning,” he uses these moments to connect with students and help them feel comfortable around him. Throughout the day, he can be found visiting classrooms, walking hallways, and spending time in common areas, getting to know the students he serves.

Monge’s commitment to service began long before he entered a school building. After serving in the military, he pursued a career in law enforcement, motivated by a desire to protect his community and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

That same dedication eventually led him to the role of School Resource Officer, where he saw an opportunity to support young people while helping create a safe, welcoming environment for learning.

For Monge, no two days are exactly alike. Whether he is collaborating with staff, addressing safety concerns, speaking with classes, or stopping to chat with students in the hallway, Monge strives to be a visible, approachable presence in the school community.

“I want students to know I’m approachable and here to help,” Monge said. “You don’t have to be in trouble to come talk to me.”
