The South Glens Falls Central School District is emphasizing its continued commitment to student nutrition and equity with the rollout of its 2026–27 food service program, which provides free breakfast and lunch to all students.

Under federal nutrition guidelines, the district’s food service program ensures that every student has access to healthy meal options each school day. As a Community Eligibility district, South Glens Falls guarantees one free breakfast and one free lunch daily for every student, regardless of family income.

District officials say the initiative is designed not only to improve student health but also to remove financial barriers that can affect academic performance and well-being. “By offering universal free meals, we’re making sure no child goes hungry and every student is ready to learn,” the district noted in its program information.

In addition to free meals, the district has reinforced its commitment to student dignity through a strict no–meal-shaming policy. Staff members are prohibited from publicly identifying students with unpaid balances, pressuring them for payment, or requiring alternative meals. This policy aligns with Board of Education Policy 8505, aimed at protecting students from stigma and embarrassment.

Families are still encouraged to complete income collection forms, even though meals are free. School officials stress that the data gathered helps determine funding levels for educational programs and services across the district. Completing the forms may also qualify families for additional benefits and discounts.

Parents and guardians have access to an online system, LINQ Connect, allowing them to manage their child’s meal account. Through the platform, families can monitor balances, set low-balance alerts, and deposit funds for à la carte purchases, such as snacks or additional items not covered under the free meal program.

The district also offers flexibility for families who want to control student purchases. Restrictions can be placed on accounts to limit or prevent the purchase of snack items by contacting the food service office.

While meals are free, some items — such as milk priced at $0.50 and snack foods — are not included in the program. Menus and additional information are available on the district’s website.

The food service department, led by School Lunch Manager Laurie Collins, encourages families to stay informed and reach out with questions about the program.
