A large moose made an unexpected appearance in the South Glens Falls community early Wednesday morning, May 7.

The moose was first spotted by residents before the start of the school day and was later captured on district security cameras. Footage showed the animal leaping over a fence at Harrison Avenue Elementary School and wandering through the parking lot at Oliver W. Winch Middle School.

Upon confirmation of the sighting, the South Glens Falls Central School District immediately contacted the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). Although DEC officers searched the area, the moose was not located.

As a precaution, students at the affected schools remained indoors for physical education and recess until the district received an all-clear from environmental officials.

No property damage were reported, and the moose has not been seen since.Moose walking on a paved road in a residential area at 6:54 a.m. on May 7, 2025. Parked cars are visible on the left, with a grassy area, trees, and bushes on the right.
