The South Glens Falls Central School District Board of Education on Tuesday, July 10, approved the hiring of Richard Murphy as interim principal of the South Glens Falls High School starting on July 24.

Murphy’s contract will run through Dec. 31, 2023, at a rate of $600 per day. He will replace current principal Peter A. Mody III, who will be leaving the district on July 31 to return to teaching.

District officials decided in June that they needed more time to recruit a larger candidate pool. The current plan is to have an interim principal until Dec. 31, 2023, so the district can reopen the search, canvas for new applicants and complete the interview and decision-making process.

Murphy previously served as the principal at Shaker High School in the North Colonie Central School District for 15 years before retiring from the district in 2021. He then served as the interim principal at Ballston Spa High School for part of the 2022-23 school year.

Murphy holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts from Siena College and a Master of Science Degree in School Counseling from the College of Saint Rose. He additionally holds certifications as a school counselor and district administrator.
