The Health Office is available to help students who are ill, have a school-related accident or wish to sign up for a school sport. A student who wants to see the nurse must get a pass from his/her classroom teacher and sign in at the Health Office, except in the case of an emergency. If it is necessary for a student to go home because of illness, he or she must be released by the nurse. The nurse will get permission to do so from a parent or guardian.

NYS HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

Students entering grades 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11 are required to have a current physical examination.

Vision screening for distance and near vision acuity, as well as hearing screening, should also be conducted within 6 months of admission to school and for students in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and grades 1, 3, 5, 7 and 11.

In addition, girls in grades 5 and 7, and boys in grade 9 will require scoliosis screenings.

School officials are encouraging families not to wait to schedule medical appointments. Please also take the time to review your child’s immunization records with their pediatrician to ensure your child has the required vaccinations for their age and grade in school. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s school nurse or pediatrician.

ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATIONS IN SCHOOLS

(See forms under more information.)

A program for the administration of medication to students in school must be managed and supervised by our school nursing personnel. Only those medications which are necessary to maintain the student in school and which must be given during school hours should be administered.

In accordance with New York State Law, medication (both prescription and over-the-counter) cannot be administered to any students through the school’s health office without the following criteria being met:

  • A written order from a licensed prescriber is required.

  • A written statement from the parent or guardian requesting administration of the medication in school is needed.

  • The parent or guardian must assume responsibility to have the medication delivered directly to the health office in a properly labeled original container.

  • The medication will be stored in a locked cabinet in the health office to ensure the safety of all our students.

Items such as Caladryl, Bactine and Antibiotic Ointments cannot be utilized in our Health Offices without both doctor and parent written permission. A medication permission form is attached for your convenience.

Please do not hesitate to call upon our health staff if you have any questions regarding our medication policy.
