Voters approve 2019-20 school year budget

On Tuesday, May 21, South Glens Falls Central School District residents voted to approve the district’s 2019-20 proposed budget with 599 voting in favor and 196 voting against it. The $58,451,178 spending plan for the 2019-20 school year. The proposed plan calls for a $1,805,058—or 3.19%—increase in spending over the current year’s budget.

“This year’s budget focuses on our district’s three priorities: safety, mental health and future-ready learning,” said Superintendent of Schools Kristine Orr. “I am thankful to our community for supporting the budget and the work of our district to provide a safe, caring and challenging educational environment for our students and staff.”

Voters also approved a $583,599 proposal to purchase two 66-passenger school buses, two 72-passenger school buses and two 30-passenger school buses with 615 voting in favor and 178 voting against it.

Finally, four candidates were elected to the board of education. Community members elected Kimberly Henkel (599), Jeff Riggi (569) and Tom Kurtz (568) to serve three-year terms, and Roger Fedele (562) was elected to serve a two-year term. All terms will begin July 1, 2019.
