South High students participate in annual “Day of Dialogue”

December 8, 2022

On Thursday, South High students got a chance to talk openly and honestly during a Day of Dialogue.

About 50 students and 10 staff and staff gathered at the nearby Pine Knolls Alliance Church community space to partake in large and small groups.

Student facilitators, trained in restorative practices, guided these talks alongside faculty. Each facilitator hosted roughly six to eight other students in restorative circles. Topics such as school values, issues students see, and changes that could be made were discussed.

The ideals of Restorative Practices guided these discussions. These practices include talking in small groups, talking pieces that focus on the speaker, and making sure everyone has a chance to speak.

The day wasn’t focused on only heavier topics, however. Students could play basketball and foosball and partake in group games like thumb wars.
