South Glens Falls students show off their skills at SkillsUSA competition

Students at SkillsUSA competitionMore than 150 Career and Technical Education students from both the F. Donald Myers and Southern Adirondack Education Centers at WSWHE BOCES participated in 35 different competitions at the Regional SkillsUSA Competition on March 20, including students from South Glens Falls CSD.

Eight South Glens Falls students were recognized with individual awards at the regional competition. Some of these students will go on to compete at the state competition, which will be held April 24-26 in Syracuse. If they qualify after the state competition, students compete on a national level from June 24-28 in Louisville, Ky.

South Glens Falls award-winning students include:

  • Luka Abbey, First Place: Cosmetology Jr. (Cosmetology)
  • Katelyn Woodruff, First Place: Promotional Bulletin Board (Cosmetology), in collaboration with a student from Ballston Spa and a student from Saratoga Springs
  • Michael Wagner, Second Place: HVAC (HVAC/R)
  • Eliana Mutia Fichtner, Fourth Place: Job Demo Open (Cosmetology)
  • Aliyah Whitman, Fourth Place: Prepared Speech (Cosmetology)
  • Samantha Eselin, Jonathan Maniacek & Skyler O’Malley, Fifth Place: Crime Scene Investigation (Criminal Justice)

Cosmetology student at SkillsUSAThe regional competition, held at Schenectady County Community College and Stratton Air National Guard Base, pitted the top winners from local competitions from eight technical schools from northeastern New York. In addition to WSWHE BOCES, students who competed were from Capital Region BOCES, Questar III and Champlain Valley Educational Services.

The competitions measured students’ hands-on skills in their chosen field of study including baking, welding, auto repair, and carpentry as well as interviewing for jobs and public speaking. Students are given an assignment that must be completed within a set time frame. Leaders in business and industry judge the contests.
