SGF Kindness Closet Grand Opening set for Dec. 7

November 25, 2019

SGF Kindness Closet Opening DetailsThe South Glens Falls Kindness Closet will celebrate its Grand Opening on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019, at 9 a.m. with a short ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by open shopping for families in need from 9:15 a.m. to noon.

The Kindness Closet, started by Tanglewood Elementary School teacher Jamie Metivier in the building a few years ago, was initially created to address the changing socio-economic dynamics at Tanglewood.

But last fall, Metivier won a $100,000 grant from Farmers Insurance through their Thank America’s Teachers® Dream Big Teacher Challenge® to expand the Kindness Closet for all families in the district. The money was used to build a freestanding structure for supplies and will enable the district to offer household items to families who need them.

The Kindness Closet’s doors will open for the first time this December!

How do I shop at the SGF Kindness Closet?
Families can simply come each month when the closet is open to get the items they need, no questions asked.

What is available at the SGF Kindness Closet?
The closet stocks items such as toilet paper, dish detergent, tissues, cleaning products and other household supplies.

Can I get food at the Kindness Closet?
No, the SGF Kindness Closet does not stock food at this time.

In addition to household items, the Dec. 7 Grand Opening will include toys for holiday gifts.

“The Kindness Closet is a perfect example of the lessons we are trying to teach our children on a regular basis,” said Superintendent of Schools Kristine Orr. “We’re so thrilled that Jamie’s vision to expand the Kindness Closet is a reality. Her dream will make the lives of thousands of people in our community better.”
