MST

Science and mathematics integrate and apply to “real-life” situations. MST is a course that explores that integration. It is taught by a two-teacher team from the disciplines of math and science. The block consists of Algebra 2, Chemistry with lab, and a lab that integrates technology (library research, computer software, graphing calculator, etc.) with the math and science courses. Students will work in teams and take a position on a selected health or environmental issue. The team will demonstrate understanding of the issue in a variety of ways.

MST MATHEMATICS – ALGEBRA 2

1 Unit 1 Year

This course is aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards and prepares students for the Algebra 2 Common Core Regents Examination. Topics include linear functions, quadratic functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, rational functions, trigonometry, sequences, series, probability and statistics. Students will take the Algebra 2 Common Core Regents Examination in June, which will count as one-fifth of the student’s overall average.
RECOMMENDATION: Successful completion of Algebra and Geometry courses and the corresponding exams with a 75 overall average in the course and on the exams

MST CHEMISTRY

1 Unit 1 Year

A recitation and laboratory course with a modern view of chemistry. Topics include: energy and matter, atomic and molecular structure, bonding, periodic table, mathematics of chemistry, kinetics and equilibrium, redox and electro-chemistry, organic chemistry and principles of reactions. Normally taken in grade 11, but may be elected in grades 10 or 12. The Chemistry Regents Examination concludes this course. A scientific calculator is recommended.
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Algebra and Geometry courses and corresponding Regents Examinations

MST INTEGRATION

1/2 Unit 1 Year

Presented in a laboratory setting, student teams will complete a project focusing on a health or environmental issue. Topics presented will focus on skills needed to complete the project, including the use of the library, computer software programs, graphing calculators, reading and understanding scientific journals and periodicals, statistical analysis of research data and the completion of a project.
