Important Considerations and School Policies
Course Load Requirements
It is expected that all students will register for an academic program requiring full-time attendance in school. Therefore, students must enroll in a minimum of five courses each semester, as well as
physical education.
Promotion and Retention Policy
The following units of credit are required for promotion to the subsequent grade:
- Grade 9/Freshman: Promotion from Grade 8
- Grade 10/Sophomore: Students have earned 4.5 cumulative credits including 1 unit of English or social studies
- Grade 11/Junior: Students have earned 9 cumulative credits including a combination of 3 units of English/social studies, 1 unit of mathematics and 1 unit of science
- Grade 12/Senior: Students have earned 15 cumulative credits including a combination of 4.5 units of English/social studies, 2 units of math, 1 unit of science. Additionally, the student must be enrolled in all courses that are required for him or her to graduate in June.
Grading System
SGFHS has a grading system that is numerical and runs from 0 to 100, with 65 as passing. Both rank and cumulative averages are calculated using all courses, including accelerated courses from eighth grade. Since the first semester of the 2018-19 school year, SGFHS has been creating sealed transcripts that communicate student performance with both an unweighted and weighted grade point average (GPA) and rank. Courses listed in this guide with an asterisk (*) are weighted 1.02 in the weighted GPA calculation.
Report Card Grades
Full-year Courses
Numeric grades will be used in reporting and recording pupil progress. However, those students who earn less than a 50 course average for first quarter, will receive a NP (Not Passing) for that course on their report card. The purpose of the NP will be indicated in a legend on the report card, i.e., NP (Not Passing) Grade of 0 – 49. As an incentive to raise a student’s expectations for his/her own performance, the NP will translate to a 50 course average for first quarter and will remain a 50 as long as the student earns at least a 50 course average for second quarter.
Semester Courses
Students who earn less than a 50 course average for the first quarter, will receive a NP (Not Passing) for that course on their report card. Similar to a full-year course, the NP will translate to a 50 average (for first quarter) and will remain a 50 as long as the student earns a combined average (for second-quarter and final exams) of at least a 75.
Appeals Process
The Board of Regents approved an appeals process for students who have scored within five points of 65 (60-64) on a required Regents exam for graduation and have a 65 course average. An appeal may be initiated by a student or by the student’s parent/guardian or teacher on his/her behalf.
In order to appeal, the following criteria must be met:
- Have taken the Regents Examination in question two times;
- Have earned a score on the Regents Examination under appeal within five points of the 65 passing score on that exam;
- Present evidence that the student has taken advantage of academic help provided by the school in the subject tested by the Regents Examination under appeal;
- Based on the student’s official transcript (prior year) or report card (current year), have a course average of 65 or better in the subject under appeal;
- Be recommended for an exemption to the graduation requirement by the teacher or Instructional Teacher Leader in the subject of the Regents Examination under appeal.
Scholastic Recognition
Academic recognition listings are determined from grade records for each marking period. All courses will be considered in selecting High Honors, Honors and Honorable Mention students. However, with regards to a student’s official rank, only credit-bearing courses will be taken into account. Academic recognition listings are as follows:
- High Honor Roll: 95 to 100
- Honor Roll: 90 to 94.9
- Honorable Mention: 85 to 89.9
At graduation, beginning with the Class fo 2023, students will be honored with the following:
- Summa Cum Laude (With Highest Honor): 95 to 100 Average
- Magna Cum Laude (With Great Honor): 90 to 94.9 Average
- Cum Laude (With Honor): 85 to 89.9 Average
National Honor Society
The South Glens Falls High School Chapter of the National Honor Society enrolls new students in the fall. The selection process is outlined below.
- A list of academically eligible students is generated by the guidance office. The minimum academic standard is a 90 cumulative GPA. This minimum must be applied fairly and consistently to all candidates.
- Students who are eligible scholastically (“candidates”) are notified that for further consideration for selection to the chapter, they must complete the Student Activity Information Form. For consideration, students must:
- Have attended South Glens Falls High School in grades 10 and 11 (plus 12 if student is a senior)
- Demonstrate volunteer hours (service)
- Demonstrate an excellent record of behavior (character) in and out of school
- Demonstrate leadership roles in school and/or community activities (leadership)
- The actual selection of new members will be made by a vote of the appointed members of the Faculty Council. All faculty members will be invited to make comments on candidates. The Faculty Council may take this information into consideration when reviewing the candidates. In addition, attendance and disciplinary referral records will be reviewed by the Faculty Council. Personal interviews for membership consideration may be conducted if the Faculty Council chooses to do so. Candidates receiving a majority vote of the Faculty Council should be invited for induction into the chapter. Those candidates who are not selected should have a list of those criteria not met listed by their name to assist the advisor and principal in handling inquiries regarding non-selection.
- Prior to notification of any candidates, the principal may be informed of the results for the purpose of administrative approval.
- Formal notification of all selected students and their parents is recommended and will include information about the induction ceremony. Notification of candidates not selected will be timely and considerate.
- Membership will not be officially bestowed until the candidate takes part in the induction ceremony.
