SHMD 2014 raises unprecedented $583,015.44

March 8, 2014

SHMD-finalThe 37th annual South High Marathon Dance raised an unprecedented $583,015.44, which was announced during the closing ceremony on March 8. The 2014 total surpasses the approximately $489K students and the community raised last year.

The total for this year’s dance follows months of work, fundraising, and of course, a 24-hour dance marathon in the gym at South High. The money will benefit 39 recipients—both individuals and organizations from South Glens Falls and neighboring areas.

“You remember tonight and know that what you have done—you have created a lasting contribution towards a better world,” said South Glens Falls High School Principal Carla Biviano.

This year senior Nick Hutchins was the top fundraiser, raising $13,912, among many other students who raised thousands of dollars. The top four student fundraiser alone each raised more than $10,000. In addition, the elementary and middle school students and families raised more than $44,000 for the Marathon Dance.

“Hey Bulldogs, you did it!” said Superintendent of Schools Michael Patton. “You have proven for the 37th time that a student body and a community can put together the greatest marathon dance on earth.”

State Senator Kathy Marchione (R-Halfmoon), who came to the dance this year, reflected on opening day at the Saratoga Race Track, saying she’s often thought how lucky she is to have the race track in her district, thinking that it must be the best day to be a senator in her district.

After attending SHMD this year, Marchione told the community, “This is the best day that I have had to be senator in New York State.”

The dance itself, which was streamed live at, has grown each year since its inception in 1977. The event has progressed from a small dance in the high school gym to an event that brings the entire community together. In its 37 year history, the Marathon Dance had raised over $4.2 million for more than 318 beneficiaries.
