SGF Winter Athletics Programming

November 18, 2020

SGF Bulldogs LogoAs we approach the next season of competition, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), Section 2 and the Foothills Council have been working to put together a winter sports season that has the health and safety of our student athletes and coaches as a top priority.

Unfortunately, not all sports and levels will be offered as a result of COVID-19 as it applies to bussing, cleaning and disinfecting, and navigating the health and safety protocols from the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and New York State Education Department (NYSED).

On Wednesday, Sept. 9, NYSPHSAA announced that fall high-risk sports, which include football and girls volleyball, would be postponed at all levels until Mar. 1, 2021 pending approval from the NYSDOH.

On Wednesday, Sept. 16, the Foothills Council announced that fall moderate-risk Sports, which include field hockey, boys & girls soccer and girls swimming and diving, would be postponed at all levels until Mar. 1, 2021.

On Tuesday, Nov. 17, NYSPHSAA announced that winter high-risk sports, which include boys and girls basketball, competitive cheer, ice hockey and wrestling, would be postponed at all levels until Jan. 4, 2021 pending approval from the NYSDOH.

Below is the status of winter and the remaining fall sports activities for the upcoming 2020-21 school year that have been established by the Foothills Council in which South Glens Falls participates in. Please note that the indoor track season has been postponed indefinitely due to the lack of available facilities and complications navigating the NYSDOH health and safety guidelines.

Academic Program

Whether you attend school full time, hybrid (two days per week in school), or fully remote, you are eligible to participate in interscholastic athletics.

Timeline for Sports Registrations

It is essential that you register on FamilyID and complete the health history form as soon as possible! Registration for the winter sports of varsity bowling and varsity boys swimming and diving will begin on Nov. 23, at 6 a.m. Registration can be done online through FamilyID on the district’s athletics website. Student athletes cannot participate on Monday, Dec. 14, 2020 if they have not been cleared by the district’s health office.

Athletic Placement Process

No new APP testing will take place this winter for current seventh- or eighth-grade athletes.

Athletes who are learning virtually or are home on remote days must provide their own transportation to school/venue for practices and competitions. All athletes will need to be picked up after practices and contests.

Travel to tryouts will be on a bus for in-person students and there will only be one student per seat as outlined in each district’s reopening protocols. Due to this transportation requirement, the sports being offered will have roster limitations.
