SGF welcomes social media expert

Students look at their phones during a presentation.Renowned social media expert Chris Vollum visited South Glens Falls recently to talk with students, as well as parents, about using social media in a productive and safe manner.

During assemblies on March 24 and 25, Vollum spoke with all students in grades 5-12. On March 25, Vollum presented as part of the district’s Parent University series in a presentation specifically to explain to parents the risks and benefits associated with social media use, and to teach them “best practices and skills to successfully navigate their 24/7 connected world.”

“We know that our students are using social media,” said Superintendent of Schools Michael Patton. “As a district, along with the Community Coalition for Family Wellness, we want to educate our students and their families on best practices for keeping students safe. We want them to learn the ways that their digital footprint is an important part of their life and future.”

Chris Vollum visited SGF to talk with students about social media use.Vollum has presented throughout the country on the topic. Participants, both students and parents, were encouraged to bring their mobile devices or tablets to the hands-on training.

Social media plays a critical role in student anxiety, self-worth and wellness. Used effectively, social media can drive positive influence and create opportunity. Vollum focused on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube Channels, Tumblr, Vine, SnapChat and ASK.FM profiles, and what impacts these will have on their personal and professional opportunities and reputations.

“I am what I post,” Vollum told students. He discussed the way recruiters, college admissions officers and even potential employers can screen social media accounts and use what they mind in the review of potential applicants.

Vollum also encouraged students to cultivate a presence on social media by posting less and saying more. He suggested they “follow” and “like” pages relevant to their aspiring interests, and join the conversation of these organizations or programs through social media. These actions, he said, could put students in touch with coaches or professors that can help them further develop themselves.

Parents also had a chance to learn about these applications, and get a deeper understanding on how to support and discuss benefits of these sites and apps with their children.
