SGF coach inspires others to support local businesses

January 27, 2021

Normally, SGF boys varsity basketball coach Chris Cottrell would be holding practices, going to tournaments and looking forward to games. But over the recent holiday break, Cottrell found himself without that familiar sound of basketballs hitting the court, the swish of the net and the built-in feeling of community that comes from being a high school coach.

And even as he was missing the challenge and comfort the sports season brings year after year, he was trying to figure out a way to help others. He landed on the idea of trying to help support local businesses that may be going through hard times right now.

“So often we’re asking our communities to donate to us and to support our student athletes,” Cottrell explained. “We’re leaders in our communities and we have an opportunity now to use our platform to help local businesses who are struggling through the pandemic.”

“As coaches, we talk about facing adversity and doing what’s right all the time, and now is a chance for us to show students how we can help the community,” he said.

Cottrell reached out to local custom apparel company Hallwear and came up with a design for the campaign, which is being sold to support local businesses. The gear available includes sweatshirts and tshirts. All proceeds from gear purchases will be going to the COVID-19 relief funds at three regional hospitals, Saratoga Hospital, Glens Falls Hospital and Albany Medical Center.

In addition, he is hitting the pavement, and encouraging others to do the same by wearing their gear when they go out to pick up a pizza or purchase a gift and then sharing photos on social media with the hashtag #leadlocal.

Cottrell says he’d love for coaches throughout Section 2, which goes north to Bolton, south to New Lebanon, west to St. Johnsville and east to the New York State line, to join him in his quest to support local business. And he says you don’t have to be a coach to get involved–anyone who wants to help is encouraged to do so.
