Scoliosis screening information for parents

October 4, 2017

Effective September 29, 2005, New York State Education Law requires that all children in grades 5-9 receive a school screening examination to identify any students with possible scoliosis (curvature of the spine).

The procedure for screening is a simple one. Either a physical education teacher or a school nurse will inspect your child’s spine as he or she stands and bends forward. If a spinal problem is suspected, our School Physicians Dr. Robert Nielson or Dr. Jean Flanagan will perform a second screening.

The School Nurse will notify parents of those students who show signs of a possible spinal abnormality. They will then be asked to see their own physician for further evaluation.

If your child is currently under active treatment for a spinal problem, or if you would rather your child go to his/her own physician for the Scoliosis Screening, you must notify us as soon as possible. We will be conducting scoliosis screenings sometime during the months of October through January.
