RiverJackZ starts musician residency at Ballard Elementary

January 25, 2022

Ballard Elementary School students have begun a unique program that will allow them to create songs with a noted area singer and songwriter.

Jack Powell – also known as RiverJackZ – began working with students on Monday, brainstorming ideas for songs that will fit a unique theme each grade has chosen.  From these themes, 17 original songs will be created.

Powell, who specializes in educational music, is a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter. He is also a member of the Zucchini Brothers – a kid-focused band that performs school concerts and hosts a syndicated radio show.

Ballard Principal Michael Huchro said the hope is that once the songs are created they can be used in future lessons.

Powell’s visit will last for three weeks. Powell will be on-site three or four days each week. Huchro said the musician will split his time between a different grade level each week.

On Monday, Jan. 24, he stopped to visit the Grade 4 of Kymberly Amodio classroom. There, he brainstormed with students about ideas for a song about being an ally to those who are being bullied.
