Transportation

(Back to Plan Homepage)

The school bus is an extension of the classroom; therefore, many of the recommendations that apply to school buildings (like social distancing and frequent cleaning) should be applied to the school bus as well. South Glens Falls has been reviewing all safety and cleaning procedures with the transportation department. The following mandatory requirements will be met.

Staffing Requirements

  • School bus drivers, monitors, attendants and mechanics shall perform a self-health assessment for symptoms of COVID-19 before arriving to work using the Pinpoint Screening Tool. If personnel are experiencing any of the symptoms of COVID-19 they should notify their employer and seek medical attention.
  • School bus drivers, monitors, attendants and mechanics must wear a face covering.
  • Transportation staff (drivers, monitors, attendants, mechanics and cleaners) will be trained and provided periodic refreshers on the proper use of personal protective equipment and the signs and symptoms of COVID-19.
  • All PPE will be provided for transportation personnel and drivers and bus aides who have direct contact with students must wear gloves.
  • Hand sanitizer will be provided for all staff in their transportation locations such as dispatch offices, employee lunch/break rooms and bus garages.

Student Rider Requirements

  • All parents/guardians will be required to screen their child/children and answer the questions on Pinpoint Screening Tool to ensure they are not experiencing any signs and symptoms of COVID-19 and do not have a fever of 100.0°F or more prior to them boarding their method of transportation to school.
  • Masks must be worn at all times while riding on the bus. If you believe your child is unable to medically tolerate a face covering, including students where such covering would impair their physical health or mental health, please contact your building principal to review this.
  • Disposable masks will be available on every bus for any student who forgets their reusable mask. No student will be denied access to transportation if they do not have a mask.
  • Students should maintain social distance (6 feet separation) on the bus. Wheelchair school buses must configure wheelchair placement to ensure social distancing of 6 feet.
  • Siblings or children who reside in the same household should be encouraged to sit together.
If students are not related, there will only be one student per seat.
  • Students and parents should maintain 6-foot distancing at bus stops and while loading and unloading.
  • Hand sanitizer is not permitted on the bus for student use. Hand sanitizer, even personal-sized containers, is not permitted on the bus by the driver and/or attendant. Schools will encourage students and families to wash their hands before and after riding on the bus.

Bus Cleaning

  • All buses which are used every day by districts and contract carriers must be cleaned/disinfected once a day.
  • High-contact spots will be wiped down after the morning and afternoon runs.
  • Buses will be disinfected nightly.

Pupil Transportation Routing

  • If South Glens Falls is in session remotely or conducting class virtually in a hybrid model, pupil transportation will be provided to nonpublic, parochial, private, charter schools or students whose Individualized Education Plans have placed them out of district whose schools are meeting in in-person sessions when/if the district is not.
  • All students are entitled to transportation by the district to the extent required by law. Transportation departments do not have the ability or the right to deny transportation for children who are in foster care, homeless or attend private or charter schools. Parents who may have missed the due date to request out-of-district transportation due to a reasonable excuse may file a 310 appeal with the Commissioner of Education.
