Prevention Council

Prevention Council LogoThe Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention Council has been providing many programs and services for the students and families in South Glens Falls for more than 30 years. Though our name has changed a couple of times through the years, our quality of services have always been outstanding. We bring evidence based education programs into the classrooms, offer counseling services and even teach a class in the high school for at risk youth.

Programs and Services

Student Assistance Program (SAP)

The SAP provides group, individual and, on a limited basis, family counseling to any student requesting services at the high school and middle school. Students may refer themselves or be referred by a member of the school staff, a parent or guardian or even a friend. All counseling is voluntary with one exception. Students caught violating alcohol or drug policies can be mandated for an evaluation with the Student Assistance Counselor.

Reconnecting Youth Program

The Reconnecting Youth Program is a high school credit-bearing class for at risk students, grades 9-12. The Prevention Council offers three classes of Reconnecting Youth (RY) in the high school. The classes meet all year, every other day. Reconnecting Youth is a peer-group approach to building life skills for at-risk high school students. The course is designed to foster personal and social skills such as self-esteem, healthy decision making, personal control, and interpersonal communication. Participants are encouraged to provide positive support for others through acceptance, motivation, caring, problem solving, listening, and shared group responsibilities. Program goals include personal responsibility for improved school attendance and performance, healthy choices around substance use, and increased ability to manage their moods.
