Information regarding weather-related closings and delays

January 24, 2019

The following letter from Superintendent of Schools Kristine Orr was sent to all parents and guardians in the South Glens Falls Central School District.

Dear SGF Families,

I understand that many families were concerned about the decision to open schools today, and I want to take this opportunity to share with you how the decision is made. Each winter storm has its own unique challenges, and there are many factors that play a part in the decision to delay or close school due to inclement weather.

In the early morning hours, I gather information from a number of sources, including the National Weather Service and local media, and receive input from our transportation/operations and maintenance departments about the road conditions in our community.

The decision is always made with student and staff safety as our top priority. However, as we’ve seen in recent days, weather conditions can change dramatically in a short period of time, including unusual fluctuations in temperature.

As a parent and community member in the district, I want to ensure you that the safety of our staff and students is on my mind everyday and with everything we do. I will take all feedback to heart and carefully consider it when making future decisions. I will be personally reviewing our procedures regarding closings and delays to determine if there are factors that can improve our delay/closure process.

Please be aware that parents or guardians who believe the roads are unsafe for travel, or who feel that weather conditions are unacceptable, should use their own judgement as to whether to send their child(ren) to school or transport them at a later time.

We will be cancelling after-school activities for today, Thursday, Jan. 24.

Please feel free to contact me at 518-793-9617 if you have further questions.

Thank you,
Superintendent of Schools
