Payroll Clerk

There is an anticipated vacancy for a payroll Clerk to work under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent for Business. This is a competitive Civil Service position which requires the applicant to be on a current Civil Service list for Payroll Clerk or be able to complete a required examination.

Position Overview:
The work involves responsibility for the performance of a variety of moderately complex clerical tasks in the preparation and control of municipal payrolls. The work requires a general understanding of specific laws, office rules, procedures and policies. The work is performed under general supervision of the County Treasurer/Director of Finance or higher ranking position in accordance with established policies and procedures. Supervision of others is not a regular responsibility of this position. Does related work as required.

GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Prepares payroll from timesheets submitted by supervisor, or principals.
  • Computes and checks computations for all overtime pay and items to be deducted.
  • Verifies time, attendance, sick and vacation reports.
  • May print payroll checks for appropriate signatures.
  • Assists in maintaining personnel files for employees.
  • Complies data and prepares periodic records and reports of payroll deductions such as social security, state and federal tax withholdings, union dues, and health insurance.
  • Computes checks for garnishments.
  • Operates personal computer and other office equipment for payroll printing.
  • Performs various clerical tasks related to payroll work involving typing, filing, and sorting.
  • Answers telephone and provides routine information.
  • Does related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate
  • Two years college with specialization in Accounting or Secretarial Science or a closely related field and one year of successful clerical experience.
  • Other: 3 years experience with specialization in clerical experience involving the operation of a computer for word processing, database, or spreadsheet applications.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Good knowledge of modern methods of maintaining and checking financial records and accounts; good knowledge of payroll procedures and applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations; good knowledge of office terminology, procedures, and equipment; good knowledge of business arithmetic and English; ability to make arithmetic computations rapidly and accurately; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to prepare and maintain written records and reports; ability to get along well with others; clerical aptitude; high degree of accuracy; tact and courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

SALARY & BENEFITS:

  • 12 Month Full-Time position (7.5 hours per day)
  • Benefits pursuant to Managerial Confidential Agreement
  • Salary: $50,000+
