Congratulations to the two South Glens Falls CSD students were given the 2015 Teen Excellence Awards, presented by The Post Star.

SGF High School seniors Krysten Johnston and Katie Matraw were recognized at a breakfast on March 4 at the Great Escape Lodge in Queensbury. They are two of the 20 students in the region who were presented with the award.

According to The Post Star, the Teen Excellence Awards “look to go beyond academics and athletics to identify outstanding young people between the ages of 13 and 19 who have demonstrated personal growth, leadership and innovation along with a commitment to the community.”

Johnston is a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society, Key Club, Book Club and Math League. She plays the cello in the orchestra and the chamber orchestra. In addition she plays varsity lacrosse and field hockey, and is an avid runner. She volunteers with South High Marathon Dance, Special Olympics, Bulldog summer camp for field hockey, the Salvation Army and a local food drive. She hopes to study geology and work in the field.

Matraw is the president of South High’s Gay/Straight Alliance, and is active with the Center Youth Action Team for the Pride Center of the Capital Region. She is also president of the high school’s Anime Club, and a peer leader for the high school’s Sources of Strength. She is a member of the National Honor Society and attends the New Visions Health Careers Exploration program through BOCES, and hopes to become a pharmacist one day.

Beginning in October, teachers, coaches, youth group leaders, church leaders, educational administrators and employers were invited to nominate teens who they believe are the young leaders of tomorrow and serve as exceptional role models in their schools, jobs, communities and beyond. A group of local judges made the final selections.
