Capital project work will take place in several district buildings this summer

June 26, 2019

Building our future bulldog logoThis summer, several buildings will be closed as a result of the district’s ongoing capital project work. The district capital project team has been working all year to prepare for the work that will be accomplished during the coming summer months. By closing buildings in the summer, it makes it possible for contractors to have access to the space without disturbing classes during the school year.

As part of the capital project, approved by district voters in December 2015, four school buildings will be closed during summer 2019. Tanglewood, Moreau and Ballard elementary schools, along South Glens Falls High School, will be closed to the public this summer. The majority of Oliver W. Winch Middle School will also be closed. Only temporary office space will be available in one section of the middle school. Buildings will close Thursday, June 27, and are expected to reopen on Aug. 28, 2019.

Finishing touches will be put on the high school’s new bus loop and eight-classroom science wing, which is expected to open this fall. New parking and student drop-off/pick-up patterns will be in place, as well.

Ballard and Tanglewood elementary schools will have their music, art and library media centers renovated this summer to offer more collaborative, flexible and student-centered spaces for teaching and learning. Ballard and will have additional classroom updates.

At Moreau Elementary School, the gymnasium will be renovated, which includes the removal of a dividing wall. Ceiling tile replacement will take place throughout the whole building. There will also be upgrades to the mechanical, energy and fire alarm systems.

Oliver W. Winch Middle School will receive new windows over the summer and general updates will take place throughout the building as well.

At the high school, site work and finishing touches will take place on the new interior and exterior spaces, which includes athletic practice fields and tennis courts. Five additional classrooms will be renovated at the high school. These include two earth science classrooms and three additional classrooms.

Asbestos abatement will take place throughout the closed buildings. All abatement will be completed prior to the start of the school year in September 2019.
