Mary Donohue Matusiewicz

Mary (Donohue) Matusiewicz ’82 is Director, Program Management Office, Sumaria Systems, Inc., Rosslyn, Virginia. In this position, she is responsible for all aspects of cost, schedule, quality and personnel management for the company’s Washington D.C. Regional Operations Center (ROC). The Washington ROC provides critical Information Technology and Intelligence services in support of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army.

Mary is a 1982 graduate of South Glens Falls High School, where she lettered in five varsity sports, earning all conference honors in field hockey, volleyball, basketball and softball. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and Business Club. At the suggestion of and with encouragement from the South High Guidance Counseling staff, Mary applied for and received an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy.

She graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1986 earning a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. Following Undergraduate Space Training, Mary served 24 years on active duty in a variety of operational, command and staff assignments, to include Commander, 20th Space Control Squadron, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. Mary served as a U.S. Air Force Exchange Officer in London, England, where she was the Chief, of Royal Air Force Space Policy and later served as Space Policy Chief on the Joint Staff, Pentagon, Washington D.C.

In her last assignment, Mary was one of only three officers — and the first woman ever — to serve as a U.S. Air Force Planner, where she was responsible for advising the Air Force Chief of Staff and Operations Deputy on the full spectrum of issues affecting the military services and preparing senior Air Force leaders for participation in Joint Chiefs of Staff deliberations.

In 1988, Mary was named the Best Space Operations Crew Commander in the Air Force. She was a distinguished graduate of Squadron Officer School and a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College and the National War College. She was awarded the Master Space Operator rating and numerous military honors to include the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Achievement Medal.

Mary holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Humanities from the Air Force Academy, a Master of Science in Systems Management Degree from the University of Denver, and a Master of Science Degree in National Security Strategy from the National Defense University.

She retired from the Air Force in October 2010 with the rank of Colonel.

Mary is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Donohue of South Glens Falls. She is married to Dan Matusiewicz of Brick, NJ. Dan is a contracting officer with the Department of Health and Human Services. He and Mary reside in Woodbridge, Virginia, with their three children: Beth (21) a senior at Virginia Tech, Tim (19) a sophomore at Penn State, and Ana (18) a freshman at Virginia Tech.
