Regular Meeting – November 18, 2019

The South Glens Falls Central School District Board of Education, Saratoga County, New York, met in regular session on Monday, November 18, 2019, at Ballard Elementary School, 300 Ballard Road, Wilton, New York 12831

Call to Order:
President Elder called the meeting to order at 6:31 p.m., led the Pledge of Allegiance and advised everyone that the meeting was being audio-recorded.

Members Present:
William Elder, John Farrell, Roger Fedele, Kimberly Henkel, Lisa Hogan, Kevin Ostrander and Jeff Riggi

Absent: Christine Dawson, Thomas Kurtz, Lauren Kraner (Student Representative) and
Parker Taft (Student Representative)

District Officials Present:
District Officials present were Kristine Orr, Superintendent of Schools, Timothy Dawkins, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, and Audrey Varney, Business Manager and District Clerk.

PRESENTATIONS:

Three Themes – A Ballard Report
Students under the direction of Mrs. Geer, Music Teacher, presented some orchestra and vocal selections. Following the performance, Mr. Huchro updated the Board on Ballard Elementary School’s commitment to the three district themes. He briefly focused on safety and the activities associated with improving readiness and response. He also discussed mental health supports for the school community and introduced new school Social Worker, Ms. Pierce. An update was presented on Open Circle and a book study initiative coming in the new year being offered to classrooms and families from the B.E.S.T. Committee. Future ready student initiatives were also discussed by Mr. Huchro, Mrs. Hudson and Mrs. Cicchino.

Severe Food Allergy Practices – Mrs. Tracy, District Nurse
District Nurse Mrs. Tracy presented district severe food allergy awareness practices including introduction of a letter to be sent home to families with students in affected classrooms.

Athletic Committee Mr. Fedele, Mrs. Hogan, Mr. Ostrander reported and Mr. Griep shared a summary, coaching evaluations and priorities.

Board President Informational Items:
Mr. Elder summarized the recent Adirondack Area School Boards Association meeting held on November 14, 2019, with Senator Little and Assemblymembers Carrie Woerner and Dan Stec present.

Superintendent of Schools Informational Items:
Ms. Orr discussed the recent New York State School Boards Association Convention held in Rochester, New York October 24 – 26, 2019. She also gave an update on the Kindness Closet being constructed on the grounds of Tanglewood Elementary School and the Grand Opening scheduled for Saturday, December 7, 2019, at 9:00 a.m. She also summarized the recent Thought Exchange Conference she attended.

Assistant Superintendent Informational Items
Mr. Dawkins updated members on the progress of the Mental Health Task Force in its second year of formation.

Public Forum: None

Board Discussion: Mr. Farrell spoke regarding the importance of the recent New York State School Boards Association Conference with emphasis on mental health and the importance of LGBTQ awareness.

Adjournment to Executive Session
Motion by Mr. Farrell, second by Mr. Ostrander and unanimously carried 7/0 adjourned the meeting to Executive Session to discuss Litigation and Personnel at 7:35 p.m.

Return to Open Session
Motion by Mr. Riggi second by Mrs. Henkel and unanimously carried 7/0 returned the meeting to open session at 8:19 p.m.

Motion by Mr. Riggi second by Mrs. Henkel and unanimously carried 7/0 adjourned the meeting at 8:20 p.m.
