Regular Meeting – September 21, 2020

The South Glens Falls Central School District Board of Education, Saratoga County, New York, met in Regular Session on Monday, September 21, 2020, at Harrison Avenue Elementary School.

Call to Order:
President Elder called the meeting to order at 6:32 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Members Present:
Christine Dawson, William Elder, John Farrell, Kimberly Henkel, Lisa Hogan, Thomas Kurtz, Kevin Ostrander and Jeff Riggi

Absent: Roger Fedele

District Officials Present:
District Officials present were Kristine Orr, Superintendent of Schools, Timothy Dawkins, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and Kevin Fottrell, Assistant Superintendent for Business and District Clerk

PRESENTATIONS:

Opening of School – Elementary, Middle and High School Report
Harrison Avenue Elementary Principal Ms. Biviano, Middle School Principal Mr. Ruby and High School Principal Mr. Mody, reported on the opening of school, staff and student happiness to return to in person learning, challenges, new scheduling and objectives.

Athletics Review – Mr. Griep
Mr. Griep discussed the recent decisions regarding fall sports and protection of students. He also reported that cross country, golf and tennis have started while other sports are being postponed.

Tenure Recognition
Ms. Orr presented certificates to Ms. Abdoo, Mr. Becht, Ms. Brigham, Ms. Dutch, Ms. Hogan-Morgan, Ms. Kessler, Ms. Janssen and congratulated Ms. Nicoll in her absence in recognition of their award of tenure.

Mr. Dawkins reported the first meeting of the Policy Committee focused on review of Policy 5300, the Code of Conduct which is being planned to present to the Board of Education at its October 19, 2020 meeting.

Board President Informational Items:
Mr. Elder summarized the recent joint Adirondack Area School Board Association and Saratoga County School Boards Association Meeting held in person and virtually.

Superintendent of Schools Informational Items:
Ms. Orr updated members with information on the Fort Edward/South Glens Falls Merger Study. She reported that a Fort Edward/South Glens Falls Merger website has been created and a committee of teachers, staff and administrators is also being established. A form is located on the district website for interested community members.

Assistant Superintendent Information Item:
Mr. Dawkins discussed the Virtual school model. He stated that the district has partnered with Glens Falls City School District and Abraham Wing School District in providing online learning by doing experiences for students. Mr. Dawkins thanked all participants for their flexibility as we work through this new learning. Approximately 700 students are participating.

Board of Education Discussion:
Mr. Ostrander expressed being glad to be back to “in person” meetings.
