Regular Meeting – October 19, 2020

The South Glens Falls Central School District Board of Education, Saratoga County, New York, met in Regular Session on Monday, October 19, 2020, at Oliver W. Winch Middle School.

Call to Order:
President Elder called the meeting to order at 6:32 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Members Present:
William Elder, John Farrell, Roger Fedele, Kimberly Henkel, Lisa Hogan, Kevin Ostrander, Jeff Riggi, Jenna Farrell, Student Representative, and Annika Currie, Student Representative

Absent: Christine Dawson, Thomas Kurtz

District Officials Present:
District Officials present were Kristine Orr, Superintendent of Schools, Timothy Dawkins, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and Kevin Fottrell, Assistant Superintendent for Business and District Clerk

PRESENTATIONS:

New York State School Boards Association Presentation – Kindness Closet
Ms. Lewis from the New York State School Boards Association honored the district for its Kindness Closet Expansion at Tanglewood Elementary School. Tanglewood Teacher, Ms. Metivier, described the important work being done.

Board of Education Recognition (NYSSBA Board of Education Week)
Ms. Orr presented certificates of appreciation to all Board members and student representatives for their dedication and efforts in support of students and staff in the South Glens Falls CSD as part of the New York State School Boards Association Board of Education Recognition Week.

K – 5 Virtual School
Mrs. Stellato, Mrs. Abrams and Mrs. Whitney, Virtual School Principal and Teachers respectively, provided a summary of the K-5 Virtual School along with their experiences related to this new learning initiative which involves 17 teachers and approximately 350 students.

District Audit Report 2019 – 2020 – Mr. Beecher
Mr. Beecher presented the 2019 – 2020 School District Audit Report, reported that the district did an excellent job and answered questions from board members.

Student Representatives Report
Ms. Currie and Ms. Farrell reported on student events in all district schools.

Board of Education Committee Reports

WSWHE BOCES
Mr. Ostrander reported on the excellent programs offered by BOCES and considering COVID 19 circumstances, administration and teachers have been able to provide opportunities for students to participate.

Safety and Security Committee
Ms. Orr summarized the meeting held prior to the board meeting. Topics included making entrances to buildings secure, holding drills, and COVID 19 reopening safety procedures.

Audit Committee
Mr. Elder summarized the committee meeting regarding the 2019 – 2020 district audit. He reported that testing on information technology security has been recommended.

Director of Special Education Mrs. Spellburg summarized the beginning of the school year learning for special needs students.

Transportation Supervisor Mr. Strassburg spoke regarding the transportation of all district students pursuant to the COVID 19 regulations.

Motion by Mr. Farrell, second by Mr. Ostrander and unanimously carried 7/0 adjourned the meeting to Executive Session at 7:06 p.m.

Return to Open Session
Motion by Mr. Ostrander, second by Mrs. Hogan and unanimously carried 7/0 returned the meeting to Open Session at 8:04 p.m.
