Regular Meeting – November 16, 2020

The South Glens Falls Central School District Board of Education, Saratoga County, New York, met in Regular Session on Monday, November 16, 2020, at Ballard Elementary School, 300 Ballard Road, Wilton, New York.

Call to Order:
President Elder called the meeting to order at 6:31 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Members Present:
Christine Dawson, William Elder, John Farrell, Roger Fedele, Kimberly Henkel, Lisa Hogan, Thomas Kurtz, Kevin Ostrander, Jenna Farrell, Student Representative, and Annika Currie, Student Representative

Absent: Jeff Riggi

District Officials Present:
District Officials present were Kristine Orr, Superintendent of Schools, Timothy Dawkins, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and Kevin Fottrell, Assistant Superintendent for Business and District Clerk

PRESENTATIONS:

BRAKE – Middle School Assistant Principal, Mr. Hammond
Middle School Assistant Principal, Mr. Hammond, discussed how an empty classroom was turned into a flexible space for mindfulness and reflection; a place for students to take a BRAKE (Breathe, Reflect, Acknowledge Emotions) during these hectic times in school. Over 350 students have participated so far.

Ballard Morning Announcements & 7 Habits – Principal Mr. Huchro and STEM Teacher Ms. Hudson
Mr. Huchro and Ms. Hudson discussed new initiatives happening at Ballard Elementary School this year including STEM, TV announcements with Green Screen and “Seven Habits of Happy Kids”.

Student Representatives Report
Ms. Currie and Ms. Farrell reported on student events in all district schools.

Board of Education Committee Reports

WSWHE BOCES
Mr. Ostrander reported there will be a WSWHE BOCES Board meeting on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 and he will update members at the next meeting.

Athletic Committee
Athletic Director Matt Griep made a presentation to the Committee regarding enhancing facilities.

Public Forum: Mr. Currie inquired about COVID contact tracing and Ms. Orr responded to his concern.

Board President Informational Items:
Mr. Elder discussed the New York State School Boards Virtual Convention and the recent Adirondack Area School Boards Association meeting.

Mr. Farrell added that he preferred the NYSSBA Convention in person attendance but found the online sessions informative.

Superintendent of Schools Informational Items:
Ms. Orr updated members with information on COVID 19 and the Fort Edward Merger Study. She encouraged parents to keep sick children home.

Assistant Superintendent Information Item
Mr. Dawkins discussed the K-5 STAR Assessment Pilot. Data will be gathered for math and Reading for Grades 2 – 5. Subsequently, it will be decided if it will be permanent.

Board of Education Discussion:
Dr. Dawson congratulated Jerilyn Stellato on her upcoming presentation to NYSATE (NYS Association for Teacher Educators) Future Ready Learning: Harnessing the Power of Technology, Instruction, and Design. She will be highlighting principles for online engagement, demonstrating instructional strategies and tech tools to prepare student teachers for instruction in the digital age.
