Ballard kindergarten teacher named Big Sister of the Year

November 17, 2014

Carol Sampson and her "Little Brother" Ballard Elementary School kindergarten teacher Carol Sampson was named Big Sister of the Year by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Southern Adirondacks at an award ceremony on Nov. 13.

Sampson, who has been a teacher in South Glens Falls for 13 years, first met her “little brother” Steven (pictured right with Sampson), when he was a five-year-old student in her kindergarten class at Tanglewood Elementary School. She said that Steven was struggling at the time because he did not have a positive role model in his life.

She reached out to Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) and was able to arrange for Steven to be her match. Twelve years later, the two are still spending time together on a regular basis.

“It has been a great experience to share in Steven’s life and watch him grow up,” Sampson said. “We have spent many hours together… We have attended BBBS holiday parties and bowling events, gone sleigh riding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, swimming, gone to many movies, visited Crandel Park and Crandel Library several times, and golfed every mini golf course in Lake George more than once!”

Sampson is looking forward to walking him across the stage in June when he graduates from high school in Hudson Falls, where he now lives.

“My hope is that I have brought a little more joy into Steven’s life. I know he knows that I am always there for him to just talk to, give him advice or encourage him to be successful,” Sampson said.
