Dear South Glens Falls CSD Community,

It is with profound sadness that I write to all members of the South Glens Falls community. Ryan Vieira, a rising South High sophomore, passed away this morning as a result of injuries sustained in a tragic bicycle accident. This accident took place on Route 32 in the Town of Moreau.

Ryan has been a member of our school community since seventh grade. Ryan will always be remembered as a polite, hard-working and respectful young man. Ryan was a dedicated member of the South High Bulldog Wrestling program and had aspirations of becoming a Section 2 champion.

The loss of a student is a difficult and challenging situation that can generate a high level of anxiety and distress in students. During this time, as the school community processes this tragic news and copes with grief, the school district will offer counseling and bereavement support services to all of our students and staff. Counselors will be on hand at South Glens Falls High School for students and staff who need support tomorrow, Wednesday, August 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the high school library. If you would like to speak with a counselor, please call (518) 792-9987.

I encourage parents and guardians to talk with their children about this tragic event. Discussing thoughts and feelings about this situation is important in helping your child work through his or her grief. We would also like to share these resources for coping: http://www.sgfcsd.org/grief-resources/.

Our condolences and thoughts go out to the Vieira family and all of Ryan’s friends and teammates.

Sincerely,

Michael Patton, Ed.D.
