The South High Marathon Dance (SHMD) is a student run function that raises money for individuals, families and organizations in need of financial assistance. With more than 80 percent of the school’s population participating in this two-day event, the students will be trying to break last year’s record of $762,153.87!

This event has grown from a small dance in the old high school gym to a celebration that brings the entire community together like nothing else. In its 39-year history, the Marathon Dance has raised over $5.6 million for more than 408 beneficiaries, not just within South Glens Falls, but many surrounding communities as well.

Dedication to New York State Trooper Timothy Pratt

As we come together to celebrate the 40th year of this amazing event, we will pay tribute to our fallen hometown hero, New York State Trooper Timothy Pratt, who died in the line of duty on Oct. 26, 2016. Trooper Pratt was a 1979 graduate of South High and was always proud his class helped launch the Marathon Dance. He saw the dance through its first years, and other than when he was serving our country in the U.S. Air Force, he always had a prominent presence at SHMD. Jeff McCabe, a friend of Tim’s, an original Marathon Dancer in 1978 and a dedicated supporter since year one, will officially dedicate the 40th Marathon Dance to Tim’s memory during the Friday night opening ceremonies.

Donating to the Event

The 2017 Marathon Dance will be held March 3 and 4 at the South Glens Falls Senior High School. Opening ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. Friday evening. Community members can donate to the dance in a variety of ways. Each of the 800+ students signed up to participate is required to collect a minimum of $150. Each of the District’s schools, including Oliver W. Winch Middle School, Ballard, Harrison Ave, Moreau, and Tanglewood Elementary will be also conducting Marathon Dance fundraising activities. In addition to monies collected by the students, members of the community and business owners can donate items to be auctioned during the dance itself. If you are interested in donating an item please contact us at

Community Fundraising Events

There are a significant number of events held prior to the dance in which money is collected, and then donated to the Marathon Dance. Numerous fundraising events have already taken place in support of this year’s event, and more than 20 additional events, listed below, are scheduled to take place between Feb. 1 and the weekend of the dance. For additional information regarding these events, and to learn of new events as they are established, visit the SHMD website at, Facebook page at, or Twitter @shmdnow. This event is open to the public, from 7 p.m. through 10:30 p.m. on Friday, March 3, and any time after 7 a.m. on Saturday, March 4.
