OWWMS cleared for reentry following evacuation for odor

October 10, 2017

At 8:48 a.m. this morning, Oliver W. Winch Middle School Principal Tim Dawkins notified emergency officials about concerns of a gas smell at the middle school. The South Glens Falls and Gansevoort Fire Departments, as well as National Grid, responded and all students and staff were immediately evacuated from the building.

Middle school maintenance staff assisted the fire officials in inspecting the building both inside and outside to determine the source of the smell. At 9:40 a.m., the Fire Chief determined that the building was safe for all students and staff to return. The smell that was previously identified had dispersed and there was nothing found out of the ordinary with our mechanical systems.

All OWWMS parents received a SchoolMessenger call regarding the incident.

“I appreciate the support of the entire middle school staff and students during this event,” said Superintendent of Schools Michael Patton, Ed.D. “Although the event was a disruption to the day, everyone performed in accordance with out safety drill protocols.”

Anyone with further questions or concerns can contact the superintendent’s office at (518) 793-9617.
