Throughout the month of May, the South Glens Falls Central School District will hold its first “Everybody Reads” event for students in kindergarten through grade 5.

The event, which officially kicked off this week in each of the district’s four elementary schools, was created by a committee of teachers, principals and library media specialists to promote literacy and unify the community.

As part of the initiative, the district will be giving one copy of the book The World According to Humphrey to each family with an elementary school-aged child, to all staff members that interact with these children in our district, and businesses that our families patronize throughout the community.

“Our vision for the project is twofold,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction Kristine Orr. “We want to inspire children to read and have fun, and we want our community to be a part of a shared experience through reading.” The project organizers also hope it will show students that reading is fun!

The book was chosen by district library media specialists and teachers. It tells the story of Humphrey, a classroom pet, through his own eyes
and what he learns about life, families and school from his vantage point in Room 26.

In addition to reading, students have the opportunity to participate in a Humphrey scavenger hunt throughout South Glens Falls. Look for Humphrey’s picture in participating businesses in the community, fill out your scavenger hunt forms and return them to your elementary school.

Also, visit our Everybody Reads page on our district website where you will find a calendar and videos read aloud by members of our community!
